This was a superbly competitive race in which Sabreur set the early pace. After 2 furlongs Sweetsauce took up the running and matched strides with Sabreur until the Red House, at which point first Umpire and then The Wizard took over. At the distance it seemed inevitable that The Wizard would hold, only to be collared by St Albans close home, winning by a head in 3 minutes 20 seconds. St Albans was an accomplished performer, winning the Chester Cup and Great Metroploitan at Epsom in 1860. Over Round 112%
